Police: Coralville Man Arrested for Blasting Windows Out of Parked Car with Rifle

The man's son was able to disarm him before police arrived, according to police accounts.


A Coralville man being held in the Johnson County Jail is facing criminal charges after allegedly doing some severe damage to a car's windows with the help of a rifle.

According to a Coralville Police press release, at 11:21 p.m. officers were called to 914 14th Ave. in Coralville for the report of a man who had shot the windows out of a car that was parked in the driveway of that residence. When they arrived they encountered the son of Michael Frederick Bell, 56, who lives at the residence where the car was parked.

The son, who also lives at the residence, told the officers that he was able to disarm his father after he shot the windows. The son then escaped with a friend, according to the release. He told the officers his father had gone inside where more weapons, including a shotgun, were located.

The Coralville Police Officers formed a perimeter around the house. They then were able to contact Bell by phone inside the house and take him into custody without incident at 1:11 a.m. There were several rifles and shotguns inside the residence, along with ammunition.

Bell was charged with reckless use of a firearm with property damage, an aggravated misdemeanor, and second-degree criminal mischief, a class D felony. He currently is in the Johnson County Jail on $12,500 bail.
