Several Democratic leaders say millions of dollars in federal funding approved more than two years ago for a passenger rail line between Iowa City and Chicago, including the Quad-Cities, remains untapped because the Iowa Legislature wonβt agree on matching funds.
βThe clock is ticking, and this year is it,β Rep. Dave Jacoby,Β D-Coralville, said Friday.
Passenger rail advocates say other states have begun eyeing the money. Federal transportation officials committed $230 million in late 2010, with the condition that the Iowa and Illinois state governments would help pay for the project. In this case, Iowa officials would need to put up a $20 million match.
βThereβs not a hard and fast deadline, but we do know other states are drawing on those federal funds, so itβs on us to access those funds and be responsible with the grant money,β said Nancy Quellhorst, president of the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce.
