Bags Of Dog Food Recalled By Hy-Vee Stores

Before you go to feed fido, you might want to check his brand of food.

Hy-Vee issued a voluntary recall of certain bags of Hy-Vee Complete Dog brand dog food.

The bags may have elevated levels aflatoxin - a chemical contaminant usually found in corn, KCCI News Channel 8 reported Friday.

Routine random tests conducted by the Iowa Department of Agriculture found the higher-than-normal level of aflatoxin in some samples of the product, which is produced in Kansas City, the TV station reported.

The recalled products were distributed from Oct. 26, 2012 to Jan. 11 of this year to stores in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Pets who exhibit sluggishness or lethargy coupled with reluctance to eat, vomiting, yellowish tint to the eyes or gums or diarrhea should see a veterinarian.

Customers are urged to check the “Best By” dates on any product they have at home and refrain from feeding any of the recalled products to their pets, Hy-Vee officials said in a news release.

Hy-Vee officials emphasized the recall is voluntary and only conducted as a precautionary measure. No illnesses have been reported in dogs consuming the product, and the product does not pose a health risk to humans handling it.

Hy-Vee officials have also removed all potentially affected products from Hy-Vee stores.

Customers can return the bags to Hy-Vee for a full refund.
