Five Things to Do This Weekend

From apples to the ACT test, here's what's going on in Urbandale today.

1. Urban bow hunting season begins in Urbandale today. Β The city allows bow hunters approved by the city to hunt on public lands and areas with owners' permission as a way to thin the deer population. Contact Jeff Casey with the if you are interested in the program.Β

2. Stop by Β on 86th Street from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Patch Editor Anne Carothers-Kay will be in her "office" on Saturday mornings this fall at various Urbandale coffee shops. Β (I'll be the one in the green Patch T-shirt.) Stop by and find out about Patch or tell me about your Urbandale.

3. Parents and teens: Don't forget the ACT test tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. at . Of course you've registered and put it on the calendar, but forgetting the test happens. (I say this from personal experience.)

4. Fall is in the air. To really celebrate the season, consider taking the kids to Applefest at Kids can make apple butter and apple cider, sample apple fritters and bob for apples. Regular admission prices apply.Β

5. If you want to get more fruits and veggies in your diet, try the half-day class Bliss in the Blender at Central Iowa CompoundingΒ 3290 100th St. The class is organized by raw-food guru Sheree Clark. The cost is $59.
