Urbandale Principal Retiring After 33 Years as Educator

Dan Meyer will be stepping down as Urbandale Middle School principal at the end of the school year.

A long-time Urbandale educator will be hanging up the chalk at the end of the school year.

The Des Moines Register reports that Dan Meyer, 56, hopes his legacy is of creating a stable environment for children during an unstable time in their lives.

Meyer has been educator for 33 years, including 16 at the middle school.

β€œI’ve had kids keep me young for 33 years,” Meyer told the Register. β€œIt’s not that I don’t like what I’m doing, but it’s a tough job.”

The president of the Parent Teacher Organization Cindy Miller described Meyer as someone who worked hard to implement ideas of parents, worked to improve communication and showed parents he cared about the kids, according to the Register article.Β

Meyer was the 2008 Iowa State Middle School Principal of the Year, according to his Twitter account.

Urbandale Middle School has nearly 900 students in grades six through eight, according to the school's website.
