American Legion Holds Flag Burning Ceremony Today at Triangle Park

Members of the Waukee American Legion and V.F.W. will host a flag burning ceremony today at 6 p.m. on the Waukee Triangle. The event is open to the public and is being held in honor of Flag Day.

Members of the Waukee American Legion, the V.F.W., Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts will honor the American flag with a ceremonial flag burning today at 6 p.m. in Triangle Park.

Flags that are tattered, damaged and are no longer serviceable will properly disposed of at the ceremony, said Jay Oxenford, commander of the Waukee American Legion Post 737.

"We're retiring these flags with dignity," said Oxenford. "We're doing this out of respect for the American flag. Old flags - you can't just throw them away. This is the way to do it. It's a very solemn ceremony."
