Volunteers Needed

Library Volunteers: The library is always in need of volunteers to help process materials, shelf read, prepare materials for crafts, assemble brochures, and clean. Those wishing to volunteer should contact Devon at 987-1280.

Remember! Treat volunteering just like a job! If you cannot make it to your scheduled shift you need to let us know!

Volunteer Guidelines

1. Age.  Volunteers should be at least 12 years old, or in 6th grade, or older.  Volunteers under 18 must have parent or guardian permission to volunteer.  Volunteers under 16 may work a maximum of 3 hours per day, and not after 7:00 PM.  Please make sure to communicate to your parent or guardian so they know where you are.

2. Confidentiality.  All patron records are confidential.  This is a legal matter and is reflected in the Waukee Public Library's Policy.  What our patrons read, view, and cehck out is private.  This information is not to be shared with others at any time.  Due to confidentiality, volunteers do not usually staff the circulation desk, or check library materials in or out.

3. Customer Service.  Our purpose and function is to serve the public.  This includes offering help when needed, or finding a staff member and taking them to the customer.

4. Courtesy.  It is always important to be courteous to our patrons, staff and other volunteers - and they should be courteous to you.

5. Attendance.  If you cannot come during the time you are scheduled, it is not a problem.  Please call to let us know as much in advance as possible.  We depend on you!

6. Dress.  Casual clothing is fine, but please, nothing torn or dirty, short-shorts, or items others may find offensive.

7. Volunteer Responsibilities.  You may be processing library materials, shelving, doring data entry, preparing crafts, shelf reading, or doing special projects.  If there are things you would like to learn to do, please do not hesitate to ask and we will try to train you to do that task - if we feel it is appropriate.  If you are assigned a task and don't understand its purpose, please ask.  You have the right to know why you are doing the work you've been assigned.

8. Shelf reading.  You may be given a group of shelves to keep straightened while you are volunteering.  "Shelf reading" means putting the books/videos/audios in order, and is an important part of keeping the library in good, usable order. 

9. Questions.  Please ask!  Direct any questions you have about the jobs you perform, library policy, operations or volunteering to a staff person.

10. Suggestions.  If you have a suggestion to make something more efficient, exciting, interesting, etc.  please tell us!  We are always looking for ways to improve.
