Author Monica Lee to Discuss Memoir Saturday at the Waukee Public Library

Author Monica Lee will discuss her first book, "The Percussionist's Wife: A Memoir of Sex, Crime & Betrayal," Saturday at the Waukee Public Library.

Writer Monica Lee will appear at the Waukee Public Library Saturday to discuss her first book, a memoir, entitled, “The Percussionist’s Wife: A Memoir of Sex, Crime & Betrayal.”

It's a juicy, true life tale of the "firing and prosecution of a high school drum line instructor." That high school drum line instructor was actually Lee's husband and the story is about what his sexual misconduct with a student did to his career and the couple's marriage.

"It's a memoir and everything in it is the truth with as much certainty as I can remember it," said Lee, a former newspaper reporter and copy editor from Minnesota.

The story begins in 2001 when Lee's husband was accused of a sex crime.  Despite the indiscretion, Lee stood by him and the couple continued to live together until 2006. They eventually divorced in 2007.

"The book is really about what happened, why I stayed with him for five years after that and why I ultimately left," Lee said. "This is also very much a record of his crime based on police records and my recollection at the time of the incident."

Thankfully, Lee says, the past is behind her. She's since remarried and is living in Illinois.

Lee will talk about the book and her experience writing it on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Waukee Public Library.
