Twenty teachers at Waukee's Brookview Elementary School in West Des Moines got a huge surprise last week when they were awarded gift cards for classroom supplies from one area retailer.
The rewards were all part of Walmart's Teacher Reward Program, a nationwide initiative that's awarding up $4.5 million to 90,000 teachers across the country, helping them to buy classroom supplies.
Brookview Elementary was chosen by the Walmart Jordan Creek store on Mills Civic Parkway in West Des Moines. Twenty Brookview teachers were each awarded a $50 Walmart gift card during a PBIS all-school assembly last Friday.

Walmart's food merchandise supervisor Mary Coleman; training coordinator Marilyn Powers; and assistant manager Bridgett Kauffman, randomly drew the names of 20 lucky teachers. Winning teachers can use the funds to purchase essential items for their classrooms such as paper, folders, binders, clipboards, pens, pencils, crayons and markers.
In addition to the gift cards, Walmart also supplied all 50 teachers at Brookview Elementary with gift bags filled with school supplies, five extra gift bags and a teacher appreciation cake.
