Extreme Heat Doesn't Deter Roadside Corn Sellers
When extreme temperatures kept others indoors, one roadside corn seller stuck it out keeping hungry Waukee residents in ears of corn.
Playgrounds were empty, lawns went quietly unmowed and kids on summer break choose indoor fun over running through the sprinklers.
With temperatures reaching well above 100 degrees, that was Friday in Waukee. Well, not everywhere in Waukee.
Parked at the corner of Dartmoor Drive and Hickman Road, across the street from the , Mark Rogers sat under the shade of a canopy, guzzling water and bagging ears of corn for Waukee residents anxious to get their hands on a little Grimes Peaches and Cream.

For $6 a baker's dozen, $3 for a half dozen or 50 cents an ear, folks could buy fresh-picked sweetcorn straight out of the field.
Rogers said he started the day around 9:45 a.m. and wouldn't leave until sometime around 6 p.m. By day's end, he hoped to clear out the 200 dozen ears of corn he came with that morning.

"It's been pretty spotty today," he said. "It's gotta be the heat. I'm just sweating out here."
Deanne Sandbulte stopped by to pick up a few ears. Standing patiently, money in hand, she said her kids made her do it.
"They were begging for it," she said.
Rogers said high temps or not, if you're looking for corn, his truck will be there well into September.
