National Night Out Tonight at Centennial Park

For the 11th consecutive year, residents will celebrate the city of Waukee’s commitment to a safe, family-oriented community by participating in the National Night Out 2012 event held tonight at from 5 to 9 p.m.

The celebration is part of a nationwide initiative sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) meant to prevent crime and drug use in communities throughout the United States. The first National Night Out event was held in 1984 in 400 communities in 23 states. Today, more than more than 37 million people in 15,110 communities, including Waukee, are expected to participate in the event held on the same date each year.

Residents are invited to bring their families to Centennial Park for food, music, demonstrations and activities, as well as the opportunity to meet other Waukee residents.

"This is our chance to show that we’re taking a stand against crime in the community," said Waukee Police Lt. Troy Mapes. "It gives people the chance to meet others in our community and show that we are all on the same page as far as dealing with crime."

The event kicks off at 5 p.m. with the Dallas County Sheriff's office grilling hamburgers and hot dogs (while quantities last). Coke products from Atlantic Bottling will also be available. Participants can bring their own beverages (alcohol acceptable, no glass please), side dishes, and desserts.

At 6 p.m., an official kick-off ceremony featuring the Waukee Big Band playing our National Anthem and a few words from Mayor Bill Peard will get things under way.

From 6 to 9 p.m., there will be activities for all ages including:

• Petting zoo
• Inflatable rides
• Rock climbing wall by U.S. Army
• K-9 demonstration by the Dallas County Sheriff's Office
• Art and crafts by the Waukee Family YMCA
• Game Truck
• Water fights provided by the Waukee Fire Department
• Mercy helicopter

Mapes said participants in National Night Out are asked to park at Waukee Stadium, Waukee High School and along Park Road to keep the surrounding streets clear of congestion.

Residents are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets as seating is limited at Centennial Park.

All food, activities and demonstrations are free to the public.
