Dorothy Cushing, a resident at The Village at Legacy Pointe retirement community of Waukee, Iowa, is featured in the 2014 Expressions Art Calendar, an award-winning calendar celebrating active aging and the arts. Her quilted piece entitled, “Jimmy’s Ties” was selected from hundreds of submissions by artists coast to coast.

At 90-years-old, Dorothy learned how to quilt by watching her mother and grandmother, and has since won many ribbons and accolades from the Iowa State Fair and Des Moines Quilters Guilds. Quilting since a young girl, Dorothy used to make quilts as she waited for her now-husband, James, to return home from World War II. She made “Jimmy’s Ties” as a keepsake for her son, Jimmy, out of neckties he has worn on special occasions.
