Waukee and West Des Moines Expected to Pay for Alice's Road Project

A key interchange project expected to improve traffic to both Waukee and West Des Moines will have to be paid by city money, city leaders say.

City leaders in both Waukee and West Des Moines will have to dig a little deeper to fund the Interstate Highway 80 interchange project.

According to an article on The Des Moines Register's website, limited state grants and a cut in federal support for transportation projects has the two cities scrambling to come up with the extra money needed to pay for the lofty project.

In January, the Federal Highway Administration approved initial plans for the interchange, slated to be built where Alice’s Road in Waukee and 105th Street in West Des Moines meet I-80. Construction is scheduled to begin next spring. Total cost for the project is $31 million.

The project received about $10 million in federal money for a bridge that has already been constructed, and Waukee has received a $5.29 million grant from the state to help extend Alice’s Road south toward I-80, the article said.

Waukee City Councilman Mike Watts said that in addition to the state RISE grant it received, Waukee has been setting aside money for the project and will issue bonds to pay for the rest.
