Waukee School Board Reorganizes, Plans and Proclaims at Monday Night Meeting

It was a busy night for the Waukee Board of Education Monday night.

A packed agenda is one thing but being able to cross off all the to-dos on that list is another.

At Monday night's regular meeting of the Waukee Board of Education, it was business on fast forward as the Board reorganized, approved plans to renovate the old Waukee Elementary and proclaimed October anti-bullying month.

Susan Bunz was elected president of the Waukee Board of Education replacing Jerry Ripperger. She previously served as vice-president. Bunz serves as corporate counsel for Pioneer Hi-Bred International.

Mary Scheve was elected vice-president of the Board of Education. Scheve previously served as a board member for the Waukee Schools. She is the Chief Financial Officer at August Home Publishing Company.

Board members also voted to keep meeting dates and times the same in the comming year. The board will meet on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 7 p.m.

Old Waukee Elementary

The Waukee School Board voted unanimously to approve the renovation and demolition design development of the old Waukee Elementary School in downtown Waukee.

The Board approved the schematic design for the project at its Sept. 10 meeting. The next and final step will be to review and approve bids for the project once they come in. Demolition could begin this winter. The project is expected to be complete by the fall of 2013.

October is Anti-Bullying Month

The Waukee School District in conjunction with the West Des Moines and Urbandale School Districts have proclaimed October to be Anti-Bullying Month. The join effort continues and reinforces the district's stance on bullying in schools and seeks to "educate and encourage positive behaviors."
