What Do You Want to See in the Old Fire Station?

It’s been vacant since April 2011 but there were grand plans for the old fire station at Seventh and Walnut streets. It was supposed to be the new Waukee Community Center.

But in the months since the idea was proposed, plans have all but fallen apart on the project. With an initial cap at $400,000, the cost to renovate the 2,700-square-foot building skyrocketed to $575,000.The plans are currently on hold.

That could change as the Waukee City Council meets for a special session tonight at 5:30 p.m. at . On the agenda is an update on the fate of the Waukee Community Center.

The building at 355 Seventh St. was built in 1966 to house the city’s water treatment plant and later became the city’s only fire station. When the new Public Works building opened at 805 University Ave., the space emptied out for good.
