Wells Fargo announces another round of West Des Moines layoffs (desmoinesregister.com subscription) — Wells Fargo is cutting 25 more jobs at its Jordan Creek campus in West Des Moines this February, part of a broader downsizing that’s reshaped its local workforce. The bank now trails Hy-Vee, headquartered in West Des Moines, as the metro’s largest employer, raising fresh concerns about job stability for area residents.
   

2. More than 250 ballots in dispute after UnityPoint nurses' union vote (kjan.com) — Nurses at Methodist West Hospital in West Des Moines are part of a closely contested union vote whose outcome remains undecided due to more than 250 disputed ballots. The National Labor Relations Board will determine whether those ballots count, while nurses and UnityPoint disagree over working conditions and the legitimacy of the challenges.
   

3. Crews free man trapped in ditch collapse during sewer work in Des Moines (who13.com) — West Des Moines firefighters were called in to help Des Moines crews rescue a sewer worker trapped waist-deep after a ditch partially collapsed on the city’s southeast side Friday morning. The man was freed in under two hours, appeared conscious, and was taken by ambulance for treatment as officials continue to investigate what went wrong.
   

4. Des Moines Menace makes Mediacom Stadium home for 2026 season (who13.com) — Des Moines Menace soccer tryouts are coming to the MidAmerican Energy Company RecPlex in West Des Moines on January 2, 2026, giving local players a shot at the 2026 roster. The club is also moving its home games to Drake University’s Mediacom Stadium and selling season memberships starting at $6 per game.
   

5. New metro coalition taps businesses to solve homelessness (axios.com) — West Des Moines is part of a new metro-wide Housing Solutions Alliance that’s trying to tackle rising homelessness across Polk County with more coordination and business involvement. The coalition is uniting cities, advocacy groups, and major employers to follow a five-year regional blueprint, explore new shelter models, and hold local governments more accountable for results.
