• Topeka District 2 councilwoman takes time off after experiencing a ‘cardiac event' (wibw.com) — Topeka City Council District 2 representative Christina Valdivia-Alcala is temporarily stepping away from council duties until February 3 after recently experiencing a cardiac event and undergoing hospital care and rehab. Her district covers all of Topeka north of the Kansas River, Oakland, and part of East Topeka, and she’s directing residents to other contacts for city concerns during her recovery.
   

• Kansas tribal leader 'heartbroken' over ICE detention center contract. He wants to cancel it (kcur.org) — From Topeka, the Prairie Band Potawatomi Tribe’s chairman says he’s “heartbroken” over a lucrative federal contract tied to ICE detention centers and is moving to cancel it. Tribal leaders have already fired Prairie Band LLC executives after Topeka TV station KSNT revealed the deal, citing concerns that profiting from detention conflicts with the tribe’s values and history.
