Deputy, Suspect Killed After Officer-Involved Shooting In Kentucky

State police have jurisdiction over officer-involved shootings, and are investigating the incident.

BENTON, KY — A sheriff’s deputy and suspect are both dead after an officer-involved shooting Monday in Kentucky, according to reports.

The incident took place about 2:10 p.m. in Marshall County, according to state police, who said a Calloway County sheriff’s deputy was shot at the scene and pronounced dead at a hospital.

The shooting occurred at the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office in Benton, according to WPSD Local 6, and a second person, who WPSD Local 6 reported was a suspect and was also shot, was taken to a hospital as well and was pronounced dead, state police said.

“Britainy and I ask Kentuckians to join us in holding the family and loved ones of the Calloway County Deputy in their prayers,” Gov. Andy Beshear said in a prepared statement. “This deputy has paid the ultimate sacrifice today while serving our commonwealth. Let us honor the life, bravery and service of this deputy.”

Route 348 was expected to be blocked for several hours Monday near the sheriff’s office due to an investigation, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. State police have jurisdiction over officer-involved shootings, and are investigating the incident.

"On behalf of #KY1, my condolences are with the family of the Calloway County Sheriff Deputy who tragically lost his life today in Marshall County,” U.S. Rep. James Comer, whose district includes both Marshall and Calloway counties, said in a tweet. “We mourn the loss of a brave public servant gone far too soon.”
