The storm flooded neighborhoods and damaged homes and caused water shortages in some areas around the city. A revamped levee system spared downtown New Orleans of the damage, but at least 95 percent of customers were left without power Thursday in seven parishes.
The following images show the human cost of the storm and its aftermath.
