• Solomon Northup Statue Arrives Ahead of January Unveiling; Weekend Events Announced (avoyellestoday.com) — A new bronze Solomon Northup statue has arrived at the Avoyelles Parish Courthouse in Marksville, where it will be unveiled on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at 2 p.m. on the Main Street plaza. The piece, titled “Hope Out of Darkness,” honors the exact site where Northup regained his freedom and anchors a weekend of events, including a free January 3 screening of 12 Years a Slave with actors and Northup descendants.
