Drag Brunch Returns to the Commons at Tulane University

Tulane Dining again served up food, fun, and glamorous performance during its recent Drag Brunch held at the Commons.

The Saturday morning brunch featured mocktails and musical acts by three New Orleans drag queens: Debbie with a D, Laveau Contraire, and Franky Canga.

“I absolutely love performing at Tulane University,” said Laveau Contraire. “One of my goals is to make drag more accessible for all ages, which is why I participate in drag queen story times around town, but it is often more difficult to reach the early college-age demographic because they can’t get into bars.”

Contraire said, “Seeing the overwhelming support for Drag Brunch in the Commons was a beautiful testament to the fact there are drag fans of all ages, and a beautiful celebration of the LGBTQ+ community at Tulane.”

The well-attended student brunch was first introduced in spring 2020 but temporarily discontinued due to the pandemic. The event’s return this fall yielded attendance of 1,785 people.

"As a Tulane graduate with a Master's in Public Health, getting to come back and share my art on campus is particularly rewarding,” said Debbie with a D. “I've had a ten year career in running STI testing at a local clinic, and I usually try to combine elements of public health and healthcare access in my shows."
