Rick Sirois, dean of students at Maranacook Middle School, told the Bangor Daily News he occasionally ate lunch with McLaughlin. During those meals, she’d talk about her bearded dragon, Ziggy.

Though he described McLaughlin as quiet, Sirois told the Daily News he admired her confidence in her beliefs. She was also fiercely protective of her friends and family.

"She was a very strong person who was mature beyond her years," he said.
