Construction Worker Saves Maine Sheriff From Drowning In Lake

Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce was placing moorings on Sebago Lake when his kayak flipped. Luckily, help was nearby.

STANDISH, ME — The sheriff of Cumberland County, Maine, was given a second chance at life thanks to the quick thinking of a good Samaritan who jumped into the frigid waters of Sebago Lake to save him.

Sheriff Kevin Joyce was placing moorings on Sebago Lake when his kayak flipped, dumping him into the cold water, WGME reported. Nearby, construction worker Tyler Leonard was finishing a project when another crew member heard a scream.

"I just paddled like crazy," Leonard told WGME, knowing he had to act quickly to save the man.

Using his canoe, Leonard was able to tow Joyce back to shore, WGME reported. Joyce was hospitalized and treated for hypothermia but has since been released.
