Maine Golfer Qualifies For 2022 U.S. Open In Massachusetts

Caleb Manuel, the defending Maine Amateur champion, played in New York to qualify for one of golf's biggest games.

HARRISON, NY — Maine golfer Caleb Manuel is headed to Brookline, Massachusetts, after shooting a 3-under 137 to qualify for the 2022 U.S. Open this week, according to a report.

Manuel, a 20-year-old Topsham native and graduate of Mt. Ararat High School, played in a 36-hole golf tournament in New York to qualify for one of golf's biggest games, the Portland Press Herald reported.

Manuel was among more than 90 golfers who competed at Old Oaks, one of several U.S. Open qualifiers held around the country. Manuel, the defending Maine Amateur champion, shot a first-round 69 in the morning and came back with a 2-under 68 in the afternoon to secure his spot in the Open, according to the Press Herald.

"It doesn’t really feel real right now," Manuel told the Press Herald.

The 2022 U.S. Open tees off on June 16 at The Country Club in Brookline. The field will feature major players including Jordan Spieth, Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, and Justin Thomas, according to CBS Sports.
