📰 News we're reading

• Maine faces new push to ban recreational marijuana sales, putting pot shops at risk (wgme.com) — A new citizen initiative launched in Augusta aims to end recreational marijuana sales statewide by 2028, which could force hundreds of Maine pot shops to switch to medical-only operations or close. Backers must gather more than 67,000 signatures by June 2027 to put the proposal before voters, while current possession limits for adults would remain unchanged.

• Tribal chief says health clinics will be strained if enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies expire (mainepublic.org) — From the State House in Augusta to tribal communities statewide, Maine leaders are warning that the expiration of enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies could strain tribal health clinics and rural hospitals. Houlton Band of Maliseets Chief Clarissa Sabattis says losing marketplace coverage for many tribal members would cut insurance reimbursements, limit help with copays, and further stress an already fragile rural health system.

• The ACLU of Maine files a brief in support of Bellows in the voter rolls dispute with the Justice Department (newenglandnewspress.com) — Maine’s secretary of state, who works out of Augusta’s State House, is getting legal backup from the ACLU of Maine in her fight with the Trump administration over unredacted voter rolls. The civil liberties group’s new court brief argues that federal demands for full voter data threaten privacy and confidence in Maine’s elections while a Portland lawsuit proceeds.
