ARNOLD, MD — A proposal to build 135 townhomes where the Severna Park Golf Center lies has sparked debate in Anne Arundel County.

Supporters argue that more housing is necessary to address the rising price of homes. Opponents worry about effects on traffic, schools and the environment. Others would just be sad to lose the driving range, mini golf course and par-three course.

County Council Member Amanda Fiedler (R-District 5) said she is "infuriated" and "outraged." Fiedler said the proposal has not yet been submitted to the county for review. She said it is "a terrible plan and needs to be pulled immediately."

A community meeting was held Tuesday evening to solicit feedback.

"I fully expected a packed house tonight, and it was. I'm committed to doing all I can to address this," Fiedler said on Facebook after the meeting. "I appreciated the opportunity, but nothing has changed for me. 135 units is outrageous for the epicenter of traffic woes."

The golf center is located at 1257 Ritchie Highway near the Arnold campus of Anne Arundel Community College.

"Imagine what adding 135 townhomes will mean for congestion, the health of the Magothy River, and life along RT2. This is not just about traffic—it's about preserving the character and environment of our community," the Magothy River Association said on Facebook. "Over the years, our neighborhoods have successfully pushed back against unwanted development. The key has always been clear: organization, collaboration, and persistence. Builders and county planners count on opposition fading away. Let's prove them wrong."

A sketch of the proposed development is available here. The developer is D.R. Horton, The Baltimore Banner reported.

Rob Brilliant, owner of the Severna Park Golf Center, told The Banner it is too early to discuss the details of the proposal.
