Florida Among Best States For Summer Road Trips

Florida has lots to offer families planning to hit the open road this summer, according to a new study, but it will cost you.

FLORIDA — Summer means getaways with the family — whether it's the beach, theme parks, or long drives to visit relatives. According to a new report from consumer finance site WalletHub, Florida is among the five best states in the country for a road trip.

Despite hassles like fluctuating gas prices, traffic woes and the higher risk of hurricanes in the Atlantic this summer, 75 percent of families traveling this summer plan to take road trips, WalletHub said.

With that in mind, WalletHub ranked all 50 states for the Best & Worst States for Summer Road Trips in 2024 based upon the cost of road trips, safety and the number and quality of activities available.

Florida came in at No. 5, while Texas led all states. According to the rankings, the top 10 states for U.S. road trips were:

  1. Texas
  2. Minnesota
  3. New York
  4. Louisiana
  5. Florida
  6. Ohio
  7. North Carolina
  8. Wyoming
  9. Maine
  10. Pennsylvania

Ranking dead last was Delaware, followed closely by Rhode Island, Connecticut and Maine.

Florida's No. 5 ranking came despite the fact that it ranked dead last when it came to tourist safety.

But the Sunshine State came in at No. 2 when it comes to activities — from beaches, sailing and aquariums that house manatees to Orlando's theme parks and fine dining in the state's cities — and was No. 23 for the cost of road trips.
