Homecoming Dances Postponed, Traditional Events Continue In Anne Arundel County

Anne Arundel postponed its homecoming dances but permitted other spirit week events. The school system hopes to host the dances later.

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — Anne Arundel County Public Schools on Monday postponed its homecoming dances but permitted other traditional events. Officials hope to host the dances later this school year. Leaders did not promise the dances would happen, however.

"Our focus has been and remains on keeping our schools open for instruction through the entirety of the school year," Superintendent George Arlotto said in a press release. "While we all want high school students and families to take part in the excitement that comes with annual homecoming activities, we must proceed judiciously. Sponsoring multi-hour events where hundreds of students are in very close proximity to each other at an indoor event is not one that is prudent at this time."

Arlotto will let schools host these kinds of celebrations instead:

  • Spirit week activities
  • Parades
  • Pep rallies in school stadiums
  • Homecoming sporting contests
  • Outdoor gatherings, like cookouts, where distancing is easier to accomplish
