Mayor Pantelides Closes Session of Council to Public

The council will close their session to meet with lawyers on a personnel issue, according to a city spokesperson.

The next scheduled meeting of the Annapolis City Council will have a closed session to discuss a personnel matter, according to a city spokesperson.

Annapolis Mayor Mike Pantelides' second council meeting will have a closed session in order to, "consult with counsel to obtain legal advice on a legal matter," to discuss "a personnel issue."

No further information was provided on the issue.

Maryland State Law 10-508 (a)(7) empowers the government bodies to close sessions of their meetings to the public in order to receive legal advice.

In February, 2012, the Maryland Attorney General issued an opinion upholding the decision to close a meeting, so long as they met the above requirements.

Pantelides campaigned on a platform of offering more transparency. In interviews with The Capital, most aldermen said the closed sessions in the past have been used appropriately.

The council's next meeting is scheduled for Monday at 7 p.m., and the closed session will take place at 6:30 p.m.
