ANNAPOLIS, MD — The Trump administration is replacing Vice Adm. Yvette Davids, the first woman and the first Hispanic person to lead the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, according to a report.

Davids, who has been the superintendent since January 2024, will be renominated for a third star and serve on the staff of the chief of naval operations, USNI News reported, citing two defense officials familiar with the matter.

Lt. Gen. Michael Borgschulte will be nominated to replace Davids and serve as the Naval Academy’s 66th superintendent, the report said. He is currently the Marine Corps deputy commandant for manpower and reserve affairs.

If confirmed by the Senate, Borgschulte would be the first Marine to lead the academy in its 180-year history.

The move by the Department of Defense comes five months after President Donald Trump fired Air Force Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr., who is Black, and comes amid a push by his administration to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives from federal and military agencies.

Davids is a career surface warfare officer and a 1989 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. She commanded the USS Curts (FFG 38), USS Bunker Hill (CG 52) and Carrier Strike Group 11.

Davids' assignment to the Curts made her the first Hispanic-American woman to command a Navy warship. This earned her the Las Primeras Award from the Mexican American Women's National Association in 2008. The honor recognizes Latinas for important 'firsts' in their fields with a national impact.

Davids succeeded Rear Adm. Fred Kacher, who was the interim superintendent following Vice. Adm. Sean Buck's retirement in July 2023.

If the reassignment is confirmed by the Senate, Davids will serve as the deputy chief of naval operations for operations, plans, strategy and warfighting development, also known as the N3-N5-N7.
