Police: Purse Taken at Gunpoint Early Tuesday

Annapolis police also report two burglaries and a bicycle theft.

A woman was nearly shot during an armed robbery in Annapolis early Tuesday.

The robbery happened at Copeland Street and Bywater Road at 1 a.m., according to police.

Police say two women and a man were approached from behind by two masked men, one of whom had a handgun. The men demanded the women's purses, according to police.

One woman ran across the street and one of the robbers followed her and took her purse. The other woman would not give it up, and the robber with the handgun fired a shot over her shoulder, according to police.

The men fled on Bywater Drive toward Belle Drive. The woman who would not give up her purse suffered a scrape on her shoulder from the gunpowder, according to police.

In a separate incident, police say unspecified items were taken from a vehicle on Newman Street on Aug. 29 or 30. The intruder used a tool to get into the locked vehicle through the driver's side door, causing damage.

A bicycle was taken at 4 p.m., Aug. 30 from in front of a business in the 1000 block of Bay Ridge Avenue. The beige and brown 2003 Free Spirit bicycle with a yellow water bottle holder had been left unsecured. The owner returned to see a man riding away on it, according to police. 

In the unit block of Marcs Court, someone entered an unlocked apartment between 3 and 3:45 p.m., Aug. 30. A bedroom was ransacked, but nothing appeared to have been taken, according to police.

In the unit block of West Washington Street, someone forced open doors to a maintenance room between 4:45 p.m., Aug. 30 and 9 a.m., Aug. 31. Nothing was reported taken, according to police.
