Teens Charged with Assaulting Security Officers in New Year's Eve Mall Brawl
An altercation between teens and mall security officers escalated when one of the teens took out a knife, police said.
Anne Arundel County police have charged three teenagers in the assault of security officers at the Westfield Annapolis Mall on New Year's Eve.
Zackery Eugene Staley, 19, of Beltsville; Delante Quashawn-Derreke Newman, 19, of Lanham; and Jayman Morgan Sloan, 18, of Bowie, were all charged with second-degree assault. Staley also faces a charge of possession of marijuana, and Sloan faces a misdemeanor theft charge.
Security officers had asked the three teens to leave the mall at about 5:49 p.m. after they were seen being disorderly, according to a police report. An altercation ensued, and one of the teens took out a knife, police said.
The officers were assaulted but were able to take the knife away from the armed suspect without injury. The others fled the mall area.
Holiday patrol officers assigned to supplement patrols in the area arrived and were able to locate the suspects nearby, police said.
