Two-Alarm Fire in Historic Annapolis

A house near West Street downtown suffers damage but no one hurt.

Crews from the city and county fire departments responded to a house fire on Munroe Court around 4:14 p.m. Saturday.

No one was inside at the start of the blaze and there were no injuries, according to Tony Spencer, public information officer for the city of Annapolis Fire Department.

A neighbor on the scene said the woman who rents the home left the dwelling for just a few minutes when a neighbor smelled smoke and fire was seen coming out of the second story of the single-family dwelling.

“I smelled smoke and looked outside but I couldn’t tell which house it was,” said neighbor John Birchfield who lives a few houses down. “When I went outside, I saw the next door neighbor with a garden house and I asked him what he was doing.”

The renter returned a short time later after she heard sirens in the area. At that time, said Birchfield, firefighters were already fighting the blaze.

Because of the proximity to the , there were many onlookers peering over a blocked off section of West Street, a block from the home, as 12 units with 38 responders and Baltimore Gas & Electric crews were on the scene to start the salvage process and determine the cause.

Firefighters are continuing their investigation into origin of the fire, said Spencer.
