Body of Boating Accident Victim Found

Kane, a graduate, had been boating on the river when he performed a hard turn maneuver that threw him and his passenger overboard. Kane's passenger was rescued, but Kane was nowhere to be found.

"Over a five-year period, we've had an average of about 12 to 13 fatal boating accidents per year," said Sgt. Art A. Windermuth with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. "We're already at the midpoint of the boating season and approaching some of our busiest times and we're already at our yearly average."

"I think that speaks for itself," added Windermuth.

Windermuth attributed the relatively high volume of fatal boating accidents to the weather, saying that because of the warmth more people have gone boating.

"The more activity we have, the more accidents we expect to see," said Windermuth.

"Everyone should follow the standard boating safety procedures such as wearing your life jacket," said Windermuth when asked for boating safety suggestions. "Historically, boating statistics tell us that 80 percent of boating fatalities are due to drownings and wearing your life jacket is one of the best ways to prevent drownings."

Windermuth also suggested keeping proper safety equipment, such as flares and an emergency VHF radio, on hand.
