'Bye Bye Birdie' a Hit for Northeast

The '50s era came back for a visit on Thursday, Friday and Saturday during Northeast High School's production of "Bye Bye Birdie," a musical originally produced by Edward Padula.

On show nights, the cast 50 not only performed, but also handled the musical performance's technical side of stage management, lights and sound. The lead roles,  layed by Tristan Freeburger, Daniele Alexander and Aidan Jaschik brought this musical comedy about a farewell concert for a 50s rock idol to life for the family and friends in the audience.

"I aimed high," said Freeburger, a sophomore, when asked why he chose to audition for the lead role of down-on-his-luck music producer Albert Peterson. "There's a lot of pressure, but there's a lot of support from everyone around us, so it's still good to do it. Everything's been going really well and I'm happy about it."

"In the past we've been doing one play and one musical," said assistant director Michelle Weisgerber. "We decided this time that a second musical would be a good way to showcase our talent. We liked the idea of "Bye Bye Birdie" because it's something that hasn't been performed locally in awhile and we had the cast to fill the part."

"They performed above and beyond," she said.

Weisgerber also emphasized the support of the rest of the school in putting on the production.

"Our parents are wonderful," she said. "We couldn't do anything without our students, parents and administration being so supportive."

Director Sarah Jester said that the students have been preparing for the production since around January.

"Since final exams, we were gung-ho," she said.
