County Health Department Expands Social Media Presence on Pinterest

Looking for some healthy recipes for Thanksgiving? Anne Arundel County's Health Department has pinned a few choice dishes on Pinterest.

The department of health's membership on the popular idea-sharing site is just the latest chapter in the county's ongoing social media push.

Since County Executive Laura Neuman took office in February, she has been treading new ground for county officials, Tweeting her activities online. Shortly after, the county's police chief joined in, and subsequently, so did his public information office. The county police's Facebook page is now in the top 10 most popular law enforcement agency pages on Facebook.

The county health department is among the first local government agencies to join Pinterest. Topics selected on the site highlight healthy recipes, ways to combat obesity, and fun exercises.

“As a tool to collect and organize pictures, express thoughts and share healthy tips, Pinterest creates a strong visual appeal for appetizing foods, fun activities, memorable events and do-it-yourself projects,” said Jackie Young, University of Maryland senior and Department of Health intern. 

The department of health has also joined other social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook.
