Firefighters Battle 100-Acre Brush Fire in Edgewater

Wednesday's high winds helped fuel the blaze, according to county fire officials.

Firefighters are on the scene of an estimated brush fire spanning 100 acres in Edgewater, walking through the woods attempting to extinguish the blaze, according to Anne Arundel County Fire Department Spokesman Lt. Jack Beall.

The call came in at around 11:15 a.m. Wednesday and was quickly elevated to a two-alarm call. The fire is in the 3500 block of Loch Haven Drive, and Beall said no homes or business have been evacuated or are in immediate danger.

Beall estimated about 40 firefighters to be at the scene working to extinguish the fire. Part of the fire reached the water and was extinguished, Beall said. Once the bulk of the flames are knocked down, firefighters will go through the woods to put out any remaining hot spots, he said.

The fire department will have crews checking the area of the blaze regularly overnight to make sure that the winds to not cause the fire to flare up again.

Today's weather presents some challenges for firefighters.

"What firefighters deal with in this weather, with the wind blowing, it tends to push the fire faster and creates more of an incident," Beall said.

On cold windy, days with low humidity like this one, Beall said residents should take extra precautions when dealing with fire or smoking materials—like embers from a fireplace—to ensure they are fully extinguished before discarding them outdoors.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, and no injuries have been reported as a result of the blaze. No roads have been closed due to the incident.
