First Responders Honored at September 11 Memorial
County Executive Laura Neuman joined first responders at the county's 9/11 Memorial in Millersville.
Police and firefighters from Anne Arundel County gathered in Millersville Wednesday to remember those lost in the attacks of September 11, 2001.Â
Anne Arundel County Executive Laura Neuman spoke in the shadow of steel beams from the World Trade Center that now serve as the centerpiece to the county's 9/11Â memorial.Â
Neuman noted that she chose to leave her job in the private sector immediately following the September 11 attacks.Â
"We all huddled around the television, unable to comprehend what was happening in the country that day. It was that day that I decided to serve the public in some way," she said.Â
The ceremony featured remarks from the fire department's chaplain, who paid respects to those lost in New York, at the Pentagon and on United Airlines Flight 93, which crash in a field in Pennsylvania.Â
"We are humbled by the bravery of the firefighters and police officers who gave their lives trying to save those in peril," he said. "We continue to grieve with our neighbors for the loss of our national innocence, and our false sense of safety."Â
