Moms Talk Q&A

When moms talk, Patch listens!

Welcome to Moms Talk Q&A! This week's question:

My kids are anxious about starting school.  How do I ease their anxiety?

Jennifer Davis:

Since school is quickly approaching I would do a count down on the calendar with them.  Also, make them part of buying school supplies.  For instance let your daughter or son pick out a special book bag, or lunch box.  Incorporate them into it, so they can be excited about what they picked out for school.  Also, ride them by their school just so they can become familiar with it again.  Most schools have a "sneak a peek" at your seat week, make sure you take them.  Last, but not least make sure school talk becomes a daily dialogue in your house even if they are resistant.  I would start getting their bedtimes back to school time so that first day isn't trying with trying to get them out of bed.

Terri Peters:

Its always hard for kids to transition to new routines.  I'd suggest making changes now, rather than the night before school begins, so your child is a little more "in the groove" before the big day.  Try moving bedtime up a little each night, until they are in bed at the "school night" time.  Start routines like getting dressed and eating breakfast first thing in the morning now rather than later.  The more things you set up as routines in advance, the less your child will have to adjust to when school starts.  You may also want to plan something to celebrate their first day or first week of school.  Perhaps an ice cream night or dinner out at a restaurant they enjoy - providing them with a small reward for transitioning back to school will go a long way!

Angee Fielder:

Anxiety about school is normal.  Why not take a positive approach to the anxiety and start talking to your kids about how great things are just waiting to happen at school this year.  I agree with Jennifer regarding riding by the school.  Also, take time out to speak candidly with your kids.  Ask them what worries they have about school starting.  Have them pick out their favorite colors or designs when it comes to school supplies.  Take a minute to ask your kids about what excites them about going to school.   This will help them find positive things to look forward to when school resumes.  If you notice tears, comfort them - crying actually helps usher out anxiety.  I hope this helps.
