Mother Gives Birth on Route 100

The baby was having trouble breathing but was assisted by a Maryland State Police officer.

Mother Melissa Dicus of Pasadena gave birth with the help of a Maryland State Police officer this morning, but the child was delivered in an unusual location: on Route 100 near Ritchie Highway.

Pasadena resident Sgt. Daniel McLain of the Quartermaster Division in Jessup came across a disabled vehicle around 7:45 a.m. McLain found that the baby was blue and still attached to the umbilical cord.

"I picked (the baby) up, turned her over and started massaging her back and the bottoms of her feet to get her to breathe," said McLain. "At one point, I flipped the baby over and attempted to clean as much mucous as I could from the baby. By the time the fire department got there, she had started to turn pink; she was still struggling to breathe but was doing well enough to get her skin tone back."

According to Cpt. James Rostek of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department, when paramedics arrived on scene the mother and child were in stable condition. Both were transported to Baltimore Washington Medical Center.

The mother and child are currently in good condition, according to Kevin Cservek, a spokesman for Baltimore Washington Medical Center.
