Riviera Beach Receives New Recycling Bins

The new 65-gallon recycling bins were rolled out this week.

Riviera Beach citizens will soon have an easier time dealing large amounts of recyclables as Anne Arundel County rolls out new 65-gallon recycling containers in communities throughout the area, though some question if they will have much effect.

"Our recycling program has been such a great success that our residents need bigger containers," said County Executive John R. Leopold in a press release. "In just four years our recycling rate has increased from 32 percent to nearly 40 percent. We are hopeful that with this added convenience the recycling rate will continue to rise."

Approximately 1700 of the new containers have been delivered to the area.

Resident Ian Jackson was unaware of the new containers but said that they were unlikely to lead him to recycle more often.

"My family already recycles," said Jackson. "We never had problems with the bins getting too full. We'll probably just recycle more at once instead of recycling more often."

Another resident, Shelly Murtaugh, said that the bins would make recycling more convenient.

"The previous bins (weren't) that small, but it's still nice to have more room," said Murtaugh.

"In all, we hope to have more than 12,000 new carts delivered to individual homes," said Leopold. "We will then start tracking the results to make a determination of whether to expand further.
