Update: Train Pulled into Odenton After Derailment
The Norfolk Southern Train could be sitting in Odenton just north of the Walgreens for the rest of Friday. It is not expected to cross any of the major roads in town.
Updated: (Friday - 11:49 a.m.) A spokesman for the Norfolk Southern said that part of a train was moved to defunct tracks in Odenton early Friday morning after a minor derailment south of town.
Company spokesman Robin Chapman said the train section is expected to remain on the tracks near Piney Orchard Parkway just north of the Walgreens site for the remainder of the day as crews work to clear the main track serving Amtrak and other rail services.
Chapman said the train, carrying mixed freight, was servicing an industry south of Odenton when it experienced a "minor derailment." He said no one was hurt.
The appearance of the train Friday grabbed the attention of many nearby residents and workers, because the track in Odenton is no longer in use. In recent years, trains have been brought through occasionally to maintain the right-of-way for the Academy Yard development.
Chapman said the train could remain in Odenton until Friday evening.
