VITA Program at Pasadena Senior Center Helps Seniors in Need

The program offers free tax assistance to seniors.

Tax season can be difficult for all of us but it can be even tougher for seniors. Low income, reduced mobility and other common issues pose problems for seniors who need to get their taxes done. The Pasadena Senior Center hopes to assist these seniors by inviting volunteers with the IRS' Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, program to help out seniors in need.

Volunteer financial specialists from around the area assist with the program by offering free tax preparation assistance. Many are retired, but some have day jobs as well. The volunteers are trained by the State Comptroller's office and the IRS. Seniors make appointments early in the year to meet with these specialists in February through April.

"I always get my taxes done here," said Thelma Jackson, a senior who regularly attends the center to take classes. "I know a lot of people here at the center do."

"It's only me now, my husband's deceased and I don't have much I can take off my taxes anymore, so I always use VITA," added Jackson. "They're very helpful."

"Every return we do is double-checked," said Nancy Barnett, a VITA volunteer who works for a financial advisory in Glen Burnie. "The preparers that work here take courses every day, get updates and learn about new tax laws. We're very thorough."

As a volunteer, Barnett isn't compensated for her work with VITA by her employer or the Senior Center, but she said she enjoys the work.

"I see the same people every year and I enjoy it," said Barnett.

VITA volunteers prepare their clients' federal and Maryland income tax returns via e-filing. They'll also assist with renters' credit if clients qualify, and offer thorough interviews for clients where they explain the filing process.

Barnett emphasized the popularity of the program and the importance of making appointments early.

"If you don't call in by the middle of January, you may not be able to get an appointment until March," said Barnett. "We do have a waitlist in case anyone cancels, though."
