Who Will Be Annapolis' Next Mayor?
Mike Pantelides leads Josh Cohen in the mayoral race with 84 votes, but that could change by the end of the day.
After Tuesday's election results proved too close to call, we should know who the city's next mayor is after election officials count the remaining votes.
Those remaining votes include a broken voting machine with about 100 votes from Ward 7's Eastport-Annapolis Neck Library, and an estimated 380 absentee ballots.
When the polls closed Tuesday, mayoral challenger Mike Pantelides led incumbent Josh Cohen by 84 votes. But with up to 400 more votes in play, the results will likely prove conclusive.
If this election's results are consistent with 2009's race, Cohen may have a slight advantage. In that election, Cohen led other candidates in absentee votes.
Starting Thursday morning, Board of Canvassers will unseal the broken voting machine and attempt to restore the missing data, while also certifying each absentee ballot.
The board's chairman Michael R. Parmele told The Capital that during this year's primary, the process took all day, but there is no time limit on the count.
