A Time for Thanks

Reflections on Thanksgiving.

The economy is tanking, the climate is out of whack and texting is making our kids illiterate. But there are no troubles that can't be temporarily eased with green bean casserole and pumpkin pie.

Indulge me while I share some of the things I am thankful for as we enter this holiday season:

  • I'm thankful for the men and women in service overseas, and firefighters and police officers, and all of those who remain on duty on days like this while all the rest of us enjoy time with our families.
  • I'm thankful for the renaissance taking place in Arbutus, with several new businesses that have opened in the last year--, , , --enhancing the quality and diversity of goods available in the community.
  • Did I mention Ben's Beans? I love that place, even though I'm not sure it's a coffee shop where people play music or a music shop that serves great coffee. The weekend jams are a fun place to hang out and meet interesting people.
  • As a news person, I'm thankful that there are always things happening in this community. Sometimes it's good news, sometimes it's bad news. It's all important to report.
  • I'm thankful for Arbutus Patch readers, many of whom might be described as loyal fans. Our readers are informed, engaged, involved, and very passionate about our community. It's nice to get a pat on the head when we do something right, but even better when people take the time to argue a point in comments, even if it is to point out a mistake I made. It means they're reading, thinking and responding. Nothing is more gratifying than being a vehicle for dialog in the community.
  • Most of all I am thankful for my lovely and wonderful wife, for her patience and understanding when Patch duties call. And thankful for my kids, who thoughtfully make sure I don't have too much money, too much free time, or too much quiet.

What are you thankful for? Share in the comments.
