Ten Years Since 9/11: Looking Back, Thinking Forward

There are many Americans with no memory of 9/11. About 20 percent of the U.S. population was not born in 2001 or too young to remember the events of that day.

An image of those tall twin towers holds no particular meaning. "It's pretty," my daughter says.

She did not watch the news with mounting horror as that Tuesday morning unfolded.

She has no sense of before and after, no concept of the evil and inhumanity that can exist.

The burden is on those of us who remember is to keep that memory, and when she asks, to explain it.
