'Tis the Season for Giving

Even in tough economic times, many people still find it in their hearts to think of those who are less fortunate. According to a recent study from the Nonprofit Research Collaborative, almost 60 percent of nonprofits are reporting a decline in charitable giving in 2011, which is down from the previous year for most charities.

It isn’t too late to give or volunteer in the Baltimore County area this holiday season.

The Fund for Social Welfare
Needs holiday volunteers to serve clients of Baltimore County Department of Social Services, including adopt-a-family sponsors, preparing food baskets and coordinating a toy drive. Volunteers are needed at the Essex, Reisterstown, Towson and Woodlawn toy stores. Contact 410-853-3021.

Good Shepherd Center
Residential treatment facility for troubled teens needs gifts for the Holiday Store. Contact 410-247-2770.

Prologue Homeless Outreach
Needs winter coats and clothes for men, women and children; children’s shoes and boots; gift cards for turkeys; new unwrapped toys (Ages newborn to 18 years of age). Contact 410- 653-1322 ext 1344.

The Salvation Army
Needs food items for food pantries, toys for “forgotten” angels – especially for preteen boys and girls. 410-347-9944.

Southwest Emergency Services
Needs donations of nonperishable food, assistance with serving a meal on Christmas Day. Contact 410-247-8154.
