Truck Explosion On Icy Baltimore Highway Kills 2, Causes 55-Vehicle Pileup

BALTIMORE, MD — Two people were killed and at least nine injured on Interstate 95 Saturday in Baltimore when an oil tanker slid off the roadway during icy conditions that police said was also responsible for a 55-vehicle pileup in the same area. The accidents were caused by a storm blamed for hundreds of crashes from the midwest to the East Coast.
Along with the two people killed in the I-95 crashes Baltimore, nine people were injured in the and triaged at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center from the wreck, health officials said. Officials said the tanker driver was killed as well as another driver who was hit by debris.
The wreck occurred in the northbound lanes near Canton Avenue.

The Maryland Transportation Authority spent hours clearing the highway. Traffic was rerouted in both directions Saturday morning while workers cleared the cars and officers investigated.

In addition to making roads hazardous, the storm grounded flights and knocked out power for thousands of people.
In Northern Virginia, 23 vehicles piled up on the Beltway near mile-marker 50 in Fairfax before sunrise, closing lanes in both direction. A man’s body was found nearby on the highway shoulder. Authorities said it was unclear how he died.
