Baltimore Among America's Most Financially Stressed Cities: Study

Baltimore ranks among the 25 cities with the most financial stress in America, according to a new SmartAsset study.

BALTIMORE, MD — Baltimore ranks among the 25 cities with the most financial stress in America, according to a new SmartAsset study.

Persistent inflation, a sliding stock market and ongoing layoffs in recent months have many Americans on edge, the SmartAsset study found.

Baltimore residents have certainly felt the impacts of an uncertain economy, ranking No. 24 in the nation as one of the cities with the most financial stress. According to the study, the city's June unemployment rate stood at 6.1 percent and its poverty rate at 20 percent.

The percentage of Baltimore residents struggling to afford housing is 19.14 percent. Twelve percent of adults in the city are experiencing food scarcity, the study found.

The financial technology company analyzed 150 of the largest U.S. cities to uncover the places with the most financial stress.

It considered eight different metrics, including housing insecurity, food insufficiency, median household income, poverty rates and the divorce rate, among other factors.
