Marylanders heading to the beach this Labor Day weekend may be met with red flags, according to the latest forecasts.

While this weekend's overall forecast calls for mild temperatures and abundant sunshine, Accuweather forecasters said a low-pressure system off Florida and a high-pressure system over New England will strengthen northeasterly winds along the mid-Atlantic coast from Sunday into Monday.

As a result, beach conditions could turn hazardous over the Labor Day holiday.

“Beachgoers should expect rough surf and strong rip currents from Florida to the Carolinas, expanding north to Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Brett Anderson said. “Minor flooding is also possible at times of high tide in areas prone to coastal flooding.”

If you're not heading to the beach, this weekend's forecast is filled with good news for those planning barbecues or other outdoor activities.

A cold front is expected to move through the Baltimore region on Friday, ushering in below-normal temperatures, according to the National Weather Service. As a result, high temperatures are predicted to reach the mid-70s to the low 80s through Sunday.

In fact, the outlook for less scorching days ahead has led the Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang to declare summer over. Forecasters cited high temperatures in the high 70s and lows in the 50s and 60s over the next two weeks. This is the earliest the forecasters have called an end to summer, as it usually happens in mid or late September or October.

"By our meteorological definition, summer ends when there’s no longer a realistic chance of three straight days of 90 degrees or higher," the Capital Weather Gang wrote. "This year, we think we’ve reached that point."

Forecasters said a disturbance may bring a few showers and thunderstorms to the mountains on Sunday, but the rain will likely avoid the Baltimore area.

On Labor Day, expect more of the same with sunny skies and temperatures reaching the upper 70s.
